The BMW M5 has been the world’s most successful performance executive sedan for many years running. Its sixth generation was launched in early 2018 and will shortly undergo an update. The new versions of the BMW M5 and the more powerful BMW M5 Competition benefit from an even sharper design for their front and rear sections. In addition, the two high-performance models from the best-selling BMW 5 Series come with an upgraded interior, new equipment features and extended driver assistance systems. As before, the 4.4-litre V8 engine delivers 441 kW/600 hp in the BMW M5, and 460 kW/625 hp in the BMW M5 Competition. This means that the BMW M5 Competition remains the most powerful model in this class. Transmitting all this power to the road is the job of the highly versatile M xDrive all-wheel drive. Key competitors are the Mercedes-AMG E 63/63 S and the Audi RS 7 Sportback. Further rivals competing only in selected markets include the Maserati Ghibli and the Lexus GS F. Today’s issue of Product Highlights is all about the new BMW M5, BMW M5 Competition and M550i xDrive.
Exterior with sharper appearance overall.
As with the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, the exterior of the new BMW M5 and M5 Competition will be updated. Signature M design elements such as an aluminium bonnet with M5-specific swage lines, wider side panels, aerodynamically optimised exterior mirror housings and a contoured roof made of “exposed” CFRP to lower the centre of gravity will continue to be found on each BMW M5. New features include:
- Dominant, one-piece kidney grille widening towards the outside with new, M-specific double slats.
- Adaptive LED headlights with Matrix technology (incl. BMW Selective Beam) with new headlight design included as standard, BMW Laserlight optional.
- Striking new bumper design.
- New air intakes with grid structure and modified airflow in the bumper.
- Redesigned rear apron and taillights with new LED elements surrounded by dark areas.
- New M-specific quad tailpipes.
BMW M5 Competition with additional differentiation.
The more powerful BMW M5 Competition top model features select design elements in high-gloss Black which set it apart from the M5. These include:
- BMW kidney grille and door entry sills at the front with additional M5 Competition lettering.
- Exterior mirror caps.
- Side gills with added M5 Competition lettering.
- M rear spoiler.
- Rear apron with diffuser insert.
- M5 Competition lettering at the rear.
BMW Laserlight and new optional equipment.
The BMW M5 and M5 Competition can be ordered with the optional latest-generation BMW Laserlight featuring a characteristic blue hue in the headlights’ “eyebrows”. The laser light follows the course of the road ahead in high-beam mode (up to 650 metres) and homogenises illumination even in low-beam mode. New optional features include:
BMW Individual Shadow Line headlights as well as the Brands Hatch Grey metallic and Motegi Red metallic exterior colours along with the BMW Individual Frozen Bluestone metallic, Tanzanite Blue II metallic and Aventurine Red II metallic exterior colours. Like the BMW M8, the M5 models can be ordered with 20-inch M light alloy wheels 810M Bicolour with mixed-size tyres, M Compound brakes in either high-gloss Red or high-gloss Black as well as (in selected markets) Remote Engine Start complete with a function for pre-heating or pre-cooling the interior to a desired temperature via the vehicle key, timer, or smartphone.
Control Display now measuring 12.3 inches.
The cockpit in the new BMW M5 and BMW M5 Competition welcomes drivers and front passengers with numerous M-specific displays and controls. Standard equipment includes M Sport seats at the front, with an embossed M logo in the headrests as well as electro-pneumatic backrest width adjustment. The driver’s workspace behind the M leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons and shift paddles is fully geared towards a highly dynamic driving experience. Red buttons on the steering wheel for the
M modes underline the model’s motorsport affinity.
New M Mode and Setup buttons.
Even a cursory glance at the cockpit immediately reveals the striking new, modified infotainment system. The BMW Live Cockpit Professional with the latest-generation BMW Operating System 7 now has an even larger, 12.3-inch central Control Display (up from 10.25 inches) with M-specific displays. New M Mode and Setup buttons in the centre console and the optional full Merino leather upholstery in Black/Midrand Beige (only for M5 Competition) contribute to the interior’s new look and feel.
Additional digital functions, new M Mode controls.
The BMW Live Cockpit Professional running BMW Operating System 7 is included as standard for the new BMW M5 and M5 Competition and now also includes the self- learning BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. This assistant takes interaction between driver and vehicle to the next level and understands instructions in natural speech. Vehicle functions that can be activated or controlled via the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant include phone calls, heating adjustments, navigation instructions, windscreen heating – and now also adjusting the new optional sunblinds and automatically lowering all windows.
The BMW Digital Key is a new feature of the Comfort Access option and can be used to unlock, start and lock the vehicle via a compatible smartphone. It enables the owner to authorise up to five additional drivers for the vehicle. Watch out for additional media information about smartphone compatibility due to be released from 23/06/2020.
M Mode and Setup buttons control instrument cluster displays.
Like the BMW Head-Up Display (complete with M View and Shift Lights), the fully digital instrument cluster for the new BMW M5 and M5 Competition comes with a range of new or extended M display modes. These focus the driver’s attention on the key displays for dynamic driving, such as engine and racing data.
New functional and design elements come in the shape of the M Mode and Setup buttons on the centre console. Up until now, three buttons provided access to individual system settings. Now these functions can be accessed with just two buttons. Setup provides immediate access to the main menu in the Control Display. Drivers can then use the iDrive Touch Controller to directly adjust the settings for engine characteristics, damping, steering and drivetrain, on a single display level.
The M Mode button allows drivers to select from three dedicated programmes to match the current use of the vehicle: ROAD, SPORT and TRACK. The M Mode button can be used to toggle between the ROAD and SPORT modes. The BMW M5 Competition offers the additional TRACK Mode activated by holding down the M Mode button.
- The ROAD setting optimises the vehicle for sporty everyday driving. All assistance systems operate to full capacity, the Info Display and Head-Up Display have an M-specific layout but also provide information such as navigation instructions.
- The SPORT Mode gives the driver more control and deliberately limits interventions from the assistance systems. The display puts the focus on driving, emphasising revs and shift points. Notifications from the assistance systems are blanked, while speeds are shown as numerical values.
- TRACK calibrates the vehicle for the race track, trimming back all features not required for fast laps. This means that the Control Display and driver assistance systems are turned off and the audio system muted.
The most powerful BMW 5 Series sedans of all time.
The new BMW M5 and M5 Competition continue to be powered by the mighty 4.4-litre V8 with M TwinPower Turbo technology, which delivers an output of 441 kW/600 hp in the M5 and 460 kW/625 hp in the M5 Competition. This makes the two BMW M performance models the most powerful BMW 5 Series sedans of all time.

* The figures for fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and range were determined in accordance with the measurement method specified for type approval in the most recent applicable version of EC Regulation 2007/715. The data refer to a vehicle with base-level equipment, as produced for the German market, with the value ranges reflecting differences resulting from different wheel and tyre sizes. The figures have already been determined on the basis of the new WLTP legislation and converted back into NEDC figures for comparability. For these vehicles, figures other than those specified here may apply for the assessment of taxes and other vehicle-related charges that are (also) based on CO2 emissions. All data are provisional.
M5 Competition: more power, faster acceleration, distinctive sound.
Like all high-performance variants from BMW M GmbH, the most powerful BMW M5 model is offered as a separate Competition model. The most powerful BMW 5 Series of all times, at 460 kW/625 hp, comes with even more direct responses and even faster acceleration – from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds, and from 0 to 200 km/h in 10.8 seconds. In the BMW M5 Competition, power is again transmitted via an eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox; the Drivelogic paddles can be used to choose between three modes for efficient, sporty or exceptionally dynamic driving. Standard equipment for the M5 Competition also includes a model-specific M Sport exhaust system with flap-controlled twin tailpipes which lend the high-performance model its distinctive, particularly throaty engine sound.
M xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system for superior stability.
All chassis and suspension components are designed to match the tremendous engine output and ensure excellent handling and superior directional stability. This owes much to the M xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system specifically developed for use in the
BMW M5 and M5 Competition. It has a pronounced rear-wheel bias and only involves the front axle once the rear wheels have reached their traction limits and require support from the front. This configuration makes both M5 models easy to control, even when using high power for maximum performance.
Three configuration options: all-wheel drive, sporty all-wheel drive and RWD.
With M xDrive, drivers can select their preferred torque split from a choice of three settings: 4WD (all-wheel drive), 4WD Sport (all-wheel drive, with considerably more power on the rear axle) and 2WD (rear-wheel drive only, with the DSC deactivated for outings on the race track). The BMW M5 and the BMW M5 Competition are fitted with M Compound brakes with blue calipers as standard. Their considerably lower weight sets them apart from conventional brakes, while the even more lightweight M Carbon Ceramics brakes, available as an option, provide even better braking performance and – especially important for use on the race track – are considerably more resistant to fading.
New additions to familiar equipment packages.
In addition to safety systems included as standard (such as Cruise Control with braking function, Approach and Pedestrian Warning with City Brake Activation and PDC), both M5 models can be ordered with numerous driver assistance systems to enhance comfort and safety even further. These are also available bundled, in the Parking Assistant, Parking Assistant Plus, Driving Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional packages.
New features of the Driving Assistant Professional for the BMW M5 include the Steering and Lane Control Assistant with extended functions, Emergency Stop Assistant, Pedestrian Evasion Aid, Crossroads Warning with City Brake Activation and Wrong-Way Warning. Assisted Driving View enables drivers to continually monitor in the Info Display what the systems are detecting and how they are responding.
New features included in the Parking Assistant are support for exiting parallel parking spaces and the Reversing Assistant, unmatched by any competitor, which has the vehicle keep a record of the last 50 metres covered at slow speeds up to 35 km/h and can automatically steer the vehicle back the exact same way if requested.
